Camp Bravo combines creativity with the enjoyment of outdoor activities providing drama teachers an opportunity to come together, explore new ideas, learn new skills, and renew their passion. This season provides four areas of focus from four amazing workshop leaders from within the world of academia and professional theatre. Not only will participants receive hands on practical tools to bring back to the classroom, you will spend three days rediscovering your talent through an intensive course of study designed to provide insight, education, and FUN!!!

Setting

Camp Bravo is located in the San Bernardino National Forest, about two hours outside of Los Angeles, at the de Beneville Pines Camp facility. Camp Bravo is set in a grove of tall pine trees and provides a natural setting with beautiful landscapes, fresh air, and numerous multi-purpose performance spaces.

Accommodations

Lodging consists of fully enclosed cabins with individual double occupancy rooms and bunk bed type accommodations.

Program

Each participant is enrolled in four workshops. Each day will include four workshop sessions, an outdoor activity, free time, and an organized nighttime activity.

COURSE OF STUDY

"The Architecture of Acting" with John Short
This workshop will explore the process of acting from the ground up. We start with the foundation – warm up physically and spiritually – and build ourselves to the penthouse. The floors in between include warm up, script analysis, objective, playing action etc…Everything you need to know about acting in three hours and if you order now, we will throw in a set of gunzu knives!

"The Art and Craft of Voiceover: A Master Class" with Bill Ackerman
This workshop is devoted to voiceover acting as it applies to television, radio commercials, narration, program promos and voice characterization as well as an overview of the business aspects of the voiceover world. It will include hands-on training as well as tips to bring back to your students.

"Becoming the Actor’s Director" with Tom McNally
The objective of this workshop is to learn tactical methods of how directors might integrate good staging techniques with superior coaching processes All directors analyze, conceptualize, stage and coach. The workshop places emphasis on the director as the stager/coacher. Directors will examine how to use “Essential Action” and “The Physical Life” as an actor-based collaborative process to staging or blocking the play.

"Commedia dell’arte" with John Apicella
This workshop will cover the development of masked theatre and comedy from the ancient Greeks and Romans, through the middle ages, the flourishing of commedia dell'arte in the Renaissance, and the continuation and development of classical improvisation to the present day and its continuing influence on contemporary entertainment. The main characters of the commedia and their archetypical movements and classic scenarios) will be demonstrated and explored.

Graduate Credit

Three transferable 500 level graduate units for teachers' continuing education are currently available through the University of Redlands. Fees are $50 per unit for a total of $150. Checks should be made out to University of Redlands and can be sent to our office with payment for camp. Camp Bravo will handle all registration forms. Anyone who would like further details should contact our office at 1-888-44-BRAVO.

Transportation

For those who are traveling from outside the Los Angeles area, van pickup is available from the local airports for an additional fee. Please call our office at 1-888-44-BRAVO for arrival and departure times.

Dates

Participants will arrive in time for dinner on Friday, and the program will continue through lunch on Monday.

Payment

The fee for Camp Bravo Teachers Weekend is $360. This includes all lodging, food, workshops, activities, and materials. Payment can be made in full, or we can reserve a spot with a deposit of $180. Many participants receive reimbursement through their schools and for California teachers, you may be able to receive some reimbursement through State Bill 1882 or through SIP funds. Drama Teachers Retreat Staff Bio's

JOHN SHORT currently teaches acting at Cal State Fullerton. In the past he has taught in Los Angeles at his own studio "the barn", as well as at Loyola Marymount University. John has been a professional actor for 24 years. He is probably best known for creating the role of Tom Sawyer in the Tony award winning Broadway musical "Big River". He has appeared in 17 feature films including "Apollo 13" and "The Grinch", as a series regular on "The Cavanaughs" on CBS, as well as many guest star appearances on a variety of television shows.

BILL ACKERMAN has taught voiceover workshops for over 12 years. He produces and directs radio commercials, narration for infomercials and industrials, and demo CDs for voiceover actors. He has been the voiceover on dozens of television commercials, over 300 radio commercials, and many animation projects. Bill has been a professional actor for over 25 years performing in numerous television programs and films. He also has an extensive theater background, having appeared in over 150 plays. Bill is a member of SAG, AFTRA and AEA and holds an MFA from UC Irvine and a BFA from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

TOM McNALLY is presently the Coordinator of Performance, Artistic Director of the Little Theatre of the Rockies and Professor of Theatre at the University of Northern Colorado. From 1981-1988, Tom was an MFA acting teacher, Coordinator of Acting and Coordinator of Undergraduate Studies at Penn State University. McNally has acted in over 150 productions in regional repertory theatre to a PBS lead role. Tom holds an MFA from Denver University and studied in the New York studio system with the likes of Uta Hagen, Sanford Meisner and others. Tom has been awarded the higher education educator of the year award and has won an EDTA Founder’s Award for outstanding instructor of the nation’s secondary drama teachers. He is also the author of the book: Acting: the Active Process.

JOHN APICELLA is a founding member and co-artistic director of The Antaeus Company, L.A.'s classical theater ensemble. A professional actor, John has appeared in dozens of feature films, and television shows from BENSON to THE WEST WING. His theater work on regional stages throughout the West recently includes THE IMAGINARY INVALID at A.C.T. in San Francisco and HISTORY BOYS at the Ahmanson in L.A. John has been studying, teaching, and performing commedia since 1984, and is a skilled maker of masks, including traditional Italian leather masks.
