Camp Bravo combines creativity with the enjoyment of outdoor activities providing drama teachers an opportunity to come together, explore new ideas, learn new skills, and renew their passion. This season provides four areas of focus from four amazing workshop leaders from within the world of academia and professional theatre. Not only will participants receive hands on practical tools to bring back to the classroom, you will spend three days rediscovering your talent through an intensive course of study designed to provide insight, education, and FUN!!!

Setting

Camp Bravo is located in the San Bernardino National Forest, about two hours outside of Los Angeles, at the de Beneville Pines Camp facility. Camp Bravo is set in a grove of tall pine trees and provides a natural setting with beautiful landscapes, fresh air, and numerous multi-purpose performance spaces.

Accommodations

Lodging consists of fully enclosed cabins with individual double occupancy rooms and bunk bed type accommodations.

Program

Each participant is enrolled in four workshops. Each day will include four workshop sessions, an outdoor activity, free time, and an organized nighttime activity.

COURSE OF STUDY

THE ART OF CLOWNING - FINDING YOUR INNER CLOWN
With Eli Simon
(Drama Chair, University of California Irvine)

This workshop focuses on Simon's basic clowning techniques. The work is designed to unveil each participant's inner clown persona. Clowning unleashes actor creativity, connection to the audience, and wild expressiveness. The work strikes at the heart of theatrical originality and play.

(Associate Artist at PlayMakers Repertory Company in Chapel Hill)

This workshop focuses on basic directing concepts as they relate to dynamic staging and theatrical composition. An outstanding teaching tool not just for directors; it is great for anyone who wants to learn how to tackle contemporary non-realistic text.

COME PLAY WITH THE BARD!
With Chris Anthony
(Associate Artistic Director The Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles)

Work with your colleagues as we crack open Shakespeare text and invite Will into our world. Participants will discover ways to incorporate movement, music and personal narrative into some of Shakespeare's most beautiful language.

WHERE DO COMPELLING STORIES COME FROM?

(Creative Executive for Walt Disney Feature Animation Studios)

What makes them work on a stage? In this workshop you'll learn simple, interactive playwriting techniques that allow students to tap into personal experience to create short plays. And you'll practice skills that turn creative or personal narratives into truly dramatic writing.

PLUS THERE'S a special performance by CLOWNZILLA - a critically acclaimed troupe that creates original silent clown shows and has toured to theatre festivals in California, Italy, China, and Korea

Graduate Credit

Three transferable 500 level graduate units for teachers' continuing education are currently available through the University of Redlands. Fees are $50 per unit for a total of $150. Checks should be made out to University of Redlands and can be sent to our office with payment for camp. Camp Bravo will handle all registration forms. Anyone who would like further details should contact our office at 1-888-44-BRAVO.

Transportation

For those who are traveling from outside the Los Angeles area, van pickup is available from the local airports for an additional fee. Please call our office at 1-888-44-BRAVO for arrival and departure times.

Dates

Friday May 27th through Monday May 30st 2011
Participants will arrive in time for dinner on Friday, and the program will continue through lunch on Monday.

Payment

The fee for Camp Bravo Teachers Weekend is $375. This includes all lodging, food, workshops, activities, and materials. Payment can be made in full, or we can reserve a spot with a deposit of $200.00. Many participants receive reimbursement through their schools and for California teachers, you may be able to receive some reimbursement through State Bill 1882 or through SIP funds. Drama Teachers Retreat Staff Bio's

ELI SIMON
Eli has been teaching clowning at UC/Irvine, where he is chair of drama He has been teaching clowning at UCI overseas for fifteen years.  His techniques are described in detail in his latest book The Art of Clowning, published by Palgrave MacMillan. Simon is the artistic director of CLOWNZILLA – a critically acclaimed troupe that creates original silent clown shows and has toured to theatre festivals in California, Italy, China, and Korea. Mr. Simon has directed productions across the country and overseas, specializing in the development of original commedias, clown shows, American classics, and musicals. His directing credits include Utah Shakespearean Festival, PCPA Theatrefest, Illinois Shakespeare Festival, South Coast Repertory, Rude Guerilla Theatre, Monkey Wrench Collective, Magic Theatre, Merrimack Repertory Theatre, La Mirada, Western Stage, One Act Theatre, Intersection for the Arts, and the Orange County Performing Arts Center.

TOM QUAINTANCE
Mr. Quaintance is an Associate Artist at PlayMakers Repertory Company in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where he will co-direct Henry IV Parts I and II and Henry V next fall.  Tom is the founder of Freight Train Shakespeare and a graduate of the MFA Directing Program at the University of California, San Diego.  Tom currently teaches at Sierra Canyon School in Chatsworth, California, and is a proud member of SDC.

CHRIS ANTHONY
Chris Anthony is an Associate Artistic Director at The Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles as well as a renowned director, teacher, actor and administrator specializing in community-based art making. Holding an MFA from Cal Arts, she has taught in venues ranging from Elementary Schools to Adult Correctional Facilities. Chris began her career at The Black Rep in St. Louis, where she regularly works. She has been part of the award-winning Will Power to Youth program for fifteen years. In addition to producing Will Power (in LA and Richmond, VA), Chris oversees all SCLA Youth & Education programs.

BRYAN DAVIDSON
Bryan is a Los Angeles-based playwright whose works have been seen at the Geffen Playhouse and at Walt Disney Concert Hall with the LA Philharmonic.  Recently, he was a playwright in residence at the William Inge Center, where he wrote an adaptation of Charlotte Perkins Gillman's Gothic classic Yellow Wallpaper.  As an arts instructor, he has taught with UCLA, the Theater @ Boston Court, the Mark Taper Forum and the Pasadena Playhouse, and was appointed an Artist in Residence for the City of Los Angeles. He is currently a Creative Executive for Walt Disney Feature Animation Studios.
